Most people are under the impression that home office needs to have a massive wooden table, mini-bar, huge sofa, and other, similar Mad Men tropes. But, while all these items are fine, not everyone has enough resources to set up such an elaborate environment in order to pay the bills or organize the schedule. A modern home office should be small, pleasant, vivid and efficient. Here are some of the tips that will help you get one.

Find the Right Location

Preferably, home office should be set up in a separate room. If you’re expecting clients, consider an isolated space a must. Even if you lack a free room, you can address this problem by setting up a backyard office. On the other hand, if you are going to use the office for telecommuting and other, more mundane tasks, any part of the house with low traffic and enough natural light will do the job just fine.

Find a Room with a View

Although some people don’t like to work next to the window because of the unpleasant glare, natural light, in fact, has a very positive effect on productivity. To reduce the glare, simply place the monitor where the sunlight won’t hit the screen, or buy an anti-glare cover. Fill in an empty space next to the wall with a bookcase, and you will already have a very bright and pleasant working nook.

Complement the Rest of the Furniture

Take this especially seriously, if you are not going to use a separate room for your office. The reasons are twofold. First, if your office furniture too strongly emulates the traditional office vibe, you will distort the overall interior design of your house. Second, if the transition from residential to working area is too jarring, you will create a “cubicle-effect” and lose some of the benefits of working from home.

Inspire Yourself

Different people find inspiration in different places. Some people are inspired by music. Other people find inspiration in bold colors and strong imagery. Some of us simply enjoy good movies. Find that piece of something that makes you whole and incorporate it into your office’s design. Even the smallest details like wall photos will create the necessary effect and lift your mood.

Be Utilitarian

Or in the other words, don’t clutter the space with the pieces you don’t need. If you use your home office for blogging, you will find very little use for large amounts storage space. Instead, put your effort into making the elements you are going to use as comfortable and as efficient as possible. Tame the Technology

To start with, place your work desk somewhere near the power outlets, so you don’t have to drag the extension cords around. Second, do your best to keep the cords completely out of sight. No matter how neat you are, they will always produce the sense of clutter and make you nervous. Also, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to hide some of your computer’s peripherals into the desk compartments to make your office look less intrusive.

Even if your office has enough natural light, sun will eventually come down. The best thing you can hope for is an atmospheric and efficient lighting that will keep you going during these late hours. The layered lighting is exactly what you hoped for. The best thing about it – it will create a perfect connective tissue and effortlessly blend your office into the rest of the room.
